Health Services Counselling Case Studies
Our Counselling sessions address personal barriers that are often complex and can prevent Job Seekers gaining or sustaining employment. Barriers such as depression, stress, anxiety, low self esteem, family issues and dependency can be address through short term counselling. Short term counselling allows strategies to be developed and implemented to help Job Seekers cope with or return to the work force.
Case Study 1:
'Jane' is a 21 year old Job Seeker who has had a history of transience and limited job experience. She has chronic anxiety which was exacerbated by the death of a close friend. 'Jane' had halted her normal daily routines, lost concentration, and cut herself off from her peers. She wore unwashed clothing and had no interest in seeking a job. After an initial consultation with her Employment Consultant (EC), 'Jane' was referred to the sites Health Service Officer (HSO).
The HSO recommended 'Jane' attend a Counselling Program in which 'Jane' participated in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, including relaxation strategies, thought mapping and motivational interviewing. She was also encouraged to use a thought diary and use her interest in art to track her moods. After completing the program 'Jane' was highly motivated to find a job and with the assistance of her EC negotiated a work trail with a bookstore owner.
Case Study 2:
Extract from Health Service Officer (HSO) report
"Today 'John' and I had our last counselling session. 'John' had attended an interview a couple of days ago and felt very optimistic about it. He said the counselling helped him to overcome his depression and present confidently to the employer. 'John' is now maintaining good eye contact, sits upright when talking, smiles more often, and stated that he is feeling a bit better and more optimistic about the future. He also stated that next week he is starting a course in security".
Case Study 3:
A 42 year old female client required assistance to decrease the barriers, including shoulder and neck pain; depression and anxiety; poor English and low motivation, affecting her ability to find employment. She was booked into a Language, Literacy and Numeracy course, a Work Conditioning Program and Counselling Sessions.
The Counselling program increased the client's motivation and enthusiasm, vocational goals were set and interview skills improved through motivational interviewing techniques, vocational counselling and career counselling. Depression and anxiety symptoms were reduced to well below normal levels through cognitive and behavioural work. The client was deemed to have no psychological barriers on completion of the counselling program. According to the client she has not felt this good in a long time both physically and mentally.
